Marzano:  Displaying Objectivity and Control:  Daily reflection about consistency when enforcing positive and negative consequences to determine if a balance between the two was obtained. If not, further reflection may be necessary on opportunities to better exhibit consistent objectivity in the future.  Interpreting Communication Styles • Watch students during interactions to verify reactions and demeanor do not demonstrate personal offense. Active Listening and Speaking • Interact with students to confirm tone of voice, body language, paraphrasing, and feedback to create an atmosphere of cooperation. Self-Reflection • Listen for student responses that indicate both negative and positive consequences are enforced fairly and consistently in the classroom.

FERPA:  Some information should never be shared without parental consent because of a Federal law more commonly known as FERPA.  Students and or their families should never be discussed in the front office or in the hallways.  The front office is a place of business and has many people coming in and out including students, guardians, other teachers, and community members.
Be a champion for our students.  Creating a positive environment as well as extinguishing negative talk are part of the Marzano evaluation tool.
Please be sure you put your comments on the Marzano video at the end of the blog as well as on the discussion board in I-Observation.  Informal evaluations will continue next week.  Remember ALL informal evaluations count and walk-throughs do not count.

  1. Is this where we post a comment on the video on the blog? I liked the way he used the non compliant kids as helpers.

  3. I like how he taught the boys how to observe and help their fellow classmates without making fun or being bossy. I feel like the coach showed great withitness, but he should have kept his phone up. I also agree with Keys. I liked how he found something for the kids who wore boots to participate with.

  4. I liked how he gave an off task student a job and checked in personally to make sure he was still focused on the task.

  5. I liked how even though the student wasn't allowed to participate, the coach was still able to have the student learn about form in volleyball.

  6. I was thrilled to see the coach teaching life skills about observing and giving feedback appropriately. Giving and receiving constructive criticism is a really important skill that students are lacking. Those few seconds will serve the young man far longer than the volleyball skills he missed out on practicing.

  7. The Coach did a great job getting everyone to participate in the activity. So didn't have the right shoes or the right clothes but he had them doing observation on everyone in the class and reporting back. I like how he did not just relay on 1 observation, it looked like they were in partners doing the observations as well. I also liked how he was teaching the one boy how to give constructive feedback and how the take some times when other students don't take the feed back well.

  8. I think at times he did a good job of interacting with the kids and getting them to interact with each other. At other times, like with the phone out and at the very beginning, he didn't seem to do a good job of getting kids to participate and complete the activity.

  9. I liked how he guided Antwon into helping others and what to look for instead of having him sit out. I also like how the coach gave Antwon a different opportunity to earn his participation points.

  12. I like the constructive criticism -- which a lot of students have a hard time understanding how to interpret. I liked using the kids who weren't doing what they were supposed to -- to help. That works well with me also.

  13. I like how the coach gave Antwon an important job and used his feedback. He didn't just give him busy work or make him sit out.
