Math and Science Night - May 17, 2016

• Monday May 23:  Tammy will be BACK in the building.  Please stop by and tell her hello and welcome back. EOY Conferences for anyone being retained, Budget Due, Pat here.  Any K - 2nd students to be retained the APP paperwork and work samples are due.  APP final conference must be signed too.
• Tuesday:  May 24th  Prekindergarten awards in classroom.  1 - 5 awards during specials.  12:25  Kinder Awards.  6th will have regular specials.
• Wednesday May 25th:  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.
• 10:00 a.m. 6th reception, Talent Show Noon - 1:00 PK - 2nd, 1:30 - 2:30  3rd - 6th grade
• Thursday May 26th:  Records Day.  Teachers may check out with Mrs. Brett or Ms. Cramer.
• Friday May 17th:  Professional Development at Coolidge  Teachers may check out with Mrs. Brett or Ms. Cramer
• Tuesday May 31st:  Professional Development at Coolidge
• Summer Professional Development:  Thank you to Ms. Ivie, Ms. Scott, Ms. Harden, Ms. Kappel, Ms. Goodall, Ms. Peake, Ms. Hunt for planning to attend the professional development to share with Coolidge staff next fall including the new standards and instructional strategies.  If I left someone off - I apologize.  

The Life Principles are NOT just for the students.   Everyone student, faculty and staff member has grown this year.  Let's celebrate that success and encourage everyone to do their best.  .  

Building open till June 3rd.  Brett and Cramer - last day June 6th.  Building will be open again July 13th for the 2016-2017 school year.

My end of the year gift to you is a penny, but why? Look at the penny and you will understand.

The year is 2016—so you will always remember this time.  "Honest Abe" Lincoln is on the front—always be honest with yourself and others.

The word LIBERTY—as they say in the Navy, you are now "at liberty," and that means you are free to do as you like. Don't waste that freedom.

IN GOD WE TRUST—you must trust in someone or something; you can't go through life alone. Trust in yourself, trust in God, trust the life you make.

A penny may be worth only one cent, and you can't buy much with a penny anymore. However, every dollar is made up of 100 pennies, and every kid's piggy bank starts with one penny. The penny, like each of you, is not made of pure silver or gold—but surely if you put enough pennies together, they will amount to something.

I thank you that you have given Coolidge the gift of yourself for the 2015-2016 school year, you helped make it important.  You helped our students set value on life, education and to set goals for themselves.

Here's a penny for luck. 

The use of sick leave for all three days in question, May 26, 27, and 31, will be allowed for those employees who have sick leave available for their use. According to the terms of the Teacher and Support CBAs, personal business is not allowed in the last week of school, so that category of leave will not be allowed. Employees who do not have sick leave but do not wish to report to work, may take leave without pay. Failure to report to work on any or all of the three days in question for employees without a sufficient balance of sick leave will indeed result in their pay being reduced for the corresponding number of hours. This was created by Gracie Jimenez, Danisha Foster, and Fernanda Torres.  Thank you Ms. Logue for working with these talented students after school.  Their determination and hard work paid off.  They placed First and the work will be displayed at the State Fair next year.


Math and Science Night:  May 17th 

Math and Science night met again yesterday to work on finishing planning for the event.  Big Shout Out to Ms. O’Shields, Ms. Keys, and Ms. Ivie for putting the finishing touches to get ready for Tuesday night.

• 4^th Grade will display their Science Fair projects in the Health Room.  There are desks in the classroom to display work.
• 5^th-6^th Grade Science projects will be in the 5^th/6^th grade classrooms.  Teachers please be sure your rooms are ready to have them set up in your classroom on student desks.
• Math and Science activities will be in the gym and cafeteria.
• Student Council:  food will be in the cafeteria.  

The sixth grade end of year reception will be held on Thursday, May 26th at 2:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.  This is a time where we will celebrate our Coolidge children and their time as Coolidge Crocodiles.

FYI.  I have had more than 1 teacher let me know that they will not be at school on the 31st of May.  This is a contract day and we will follow the negotiated agreement.  Here is the response from Laurie Coleman:

The Impact of Relationships  Building on Student Achievement 

Relationships mater at all levels because students who like you will work harder in class.  From now to the end of the year (10 school days) learn 3 things about the students in your class that you didn't already know. 

**Reality: Teachers & Schools Can Succeed.  Ask yourself these questions:

1) In what ways did I foster optimism and gratitude today for my students?
2) How did I do my best to make this lesson relevant for my students?
3) How well did I manage my stress today?
4) Did I do my best to be fully engaging in helping each student succeed?

Thank you to Carson Cramer and the Coolidge Staff for all you do.  It takes everyone working together to create a safe learning environment for our students.

Shout out to the Coolidge Track Team.  We had 41 students participate.  37 of the track stars placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.  Our 14 first place winners will be participating in the Regional Track meet on May 18th.

Shout out to Ms. Goodall.  She had her Donors Choose project funded for $2,530.  Her project includes materials for reading and writing.  Support Sonic - they funded all projects on May 6th.

MyOn - We have reached over a million minutes of reading!  Keep up the good work.

Procedures Procedures Procedures

Going over procedures is a good way to remind everyone what the expectations are.  In addition to going over procedures it is vital that students are monitored for the desired effect.  If a child is not meeting the procedure STOP, take a breathe, and review the procedure again. And again if necessary modeling redirection and a calm voice.

10 Concrete Steps for Working with At-Risk Youth
The next time you are tempted to:  yell at a kid; blame akid; make fun of akid; kick a kid out of your class; be sarcastic with a kid, give up on a kid; I want you to think of the last time this has happened to you.  You have a choice.  What you do defines who you are as a teacher.  You can react on your feelings or you can try this 10 step plan.

1. Stop.  or at lest slow down.
2. Think.  Take a few minutes to think about what ou are feeling.  Don't react.
3. Don't take it personal.  It's not about you.  Don't take what your students say and do personally.
4. Don't blame the student.  It's not their fault they were raped, beaten, or told they were stupid and worthless.
5. Don't call them names.  Don't pile on negative reinforcements.  Sarcasm and name-calling doesn't work.  THey should never hear this from a professional.
6. Don't expect them to immediately trust you.  Show them that you care - again and again and again.  It takes over a year of your consistent high expectations, consistent caring, and consistent positive role modeling to instill trust and confidence.
7. Give them encouragement and positive reinforcement.  Tell them they are brilliant, creative, and imaginative.  Help them to believe in themselves again.
8. Don't tell them their problem is not a big deal.  If a student talks to you, it's important.  Validate their feelings.
9. Help your students  know themselves.  Ask questions, show interest.  Help them discover what causes their feelings of sadness, anger, and frustration that affect their behavior.
10. Never give up.  If you have to go back to Step 1 do it, but never give up.
