Instructional Environment

In creating an instructional environment consider using anchor charts and accountable talk to actively engage students, make meaning, and transfer learning.
Anchor charts are created with students during a mini-lesson giving them ownership over their own learning and to anchor the learning and thinking to create a context for building background. The anchor chart can be a path to validate student thinking, and a way to track student learning. The charts also allow for referencing prior learning, and learning that is built upon.
When conducting a class discussion using accountable talk the participants in the conversation are held accountable to give reasons and evidence for opinions and thoughts.
Use Accountable Discussion sentence stems at any point in the lesson to structure meaningful conversation:
  • BEFORE A LESSON TO TAP INTO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
  • DURING A LESSON TO KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED IN THINKING ABOUT THE TEXT
  • AFTER A LESSON TO GET STUDENTS TO REFER BACK INTO THE TEXT TO FIND EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THEIR THINKING OR TO PROVE THEIR POINT
  • WHEN DISCUSSING ANY CONCEPT IN WHICH STUDENTS SHOULD “EXPLAIN” OR “PROVE” THEIR THINKING

To Develop Every Child Into a Reader:
  • Everyday a child reads something they choose to read.
  • Every child reads accurately
  • Every child reads something they understand.
  • Every child writes something that is personal and meaningful daily.
  • Every child talks with peers about reading and writing.
  • Every child hears an adult reader read fluently.

"Effective teachers introduce norms, procedures, and routines on the very first day of school and continue to teach them the first week of school." Harry Wong, First Days of School
Effective discipline is evident in classrooms that have set procedures. When students are able to self-monitor their behaviors, they are able to address the learning issues at any grade level. Students must have a firm, set plan for discipline. Although procedures are necessary for effective discipline, there is a difference between a discipline plan and procedures.
  • DISCIPLINE CONCERNS HOW STUDENTS BEHAVE.
  • PROCEDURES CONCERN HOW THING ARE DONE.
  • DISCIPLINE HAS PENALTIES AND REWARDS.
  • PROCEDURES HAVE NO PENALTIES OR REWARDS.

In your discipline plan, consider all the different places in the school where you need to control students’ behavior. Consider classroom norms, playground norms, hallway norms, and cafeteria norms. Explore other places and norms as you think about your school and the expectations you have for your students.
Dear Coolidge Staff,

It’s that time of year - Back To School!  Last year brought many thought-provoking changes and learning challenges – adding instructional coaches to our staff as well as a new literacy program.  Please allow me to thank each of you for such an incredible year as I look forward to an even better one! I hope this letter finds you well-rested and prepared to begin the 2017-2018 school year! There is a lot to be excited about in this new school year, including new staff, new curriculum, and new students.  I look forward to you sharing in these exciting times.

Our focus remains on increasing student achievement every day by providing a challenging, supportive and creative environment in which to develop lifelong learning and proper social skills.  Your administrative team and I look forward to partnering with you this year in this ever-important endeavor.  For the 2017-2018 school year we welcome Ms. Jana Huggins as our new assistant principal.  Returning to the Coolidge team is Ms. Helmick as our instructional coach and Mr. Dye has moved to a new position as remedial specialist.  We are lucky to have Ms. Ross on staff 5 days a week this year.  Additionally, Coolidge has teamed with the Oklahoma Health Department to bring additional services to our students and families at Coolidge Elementary School.

Starting a new year gives us the opportunity to make new plans, design new strategies, and implement new ideas.  There is a special kind of joy and satisfaction in planning lessons and activities for a new class; although the subject might be the same, the students are new, and they appreciate the planning that is done for them.  Here are a few important dates for your calendar:

·         July 17 – 21 Back to School Enrollment
·         July 20 -21 New Teacher Orientation
·          July 25 – Balanced Literacy Training thru the district.
·         July 26 – 27  Professional Development – Coolidge
·         July 28 – Word day in your room
·         July 31 – Work day in your room
        July 31 - Meet the Teacher 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.
·         August 1 – First Day of School

I know we will be seeing many of you soon and look very much forward to seeing everyone on July 26, 2017 when we begin our work of providing a challenging, productive, and safe learning environment that supports our dedication to excellence.  Together we’ll make our upcoming year an extremely rewarding and memorable experience.

Melissa
