"Effective teachers introduce norms, procedures, and routines on the very first day of school and continue to teach them the first week of school." Harry Wong, First Days of School
Effective discipline is evident in classrooms that have set procedures. When students are able to self-monitor their behaviors, they are able to address the learning issues at any grade level. Students must have a firm, set plan for discipline. Although procedures are necessary for effective discipline, there is a difference between a discipline plan and procedures.
- DISCIPLINE CONCERNS HOW STUDENTS BEHAVE.
- PROCEDURES CONCERN HOW THING ARE DONE.
- DISCIPLINE HAS PENALTIES AND REWARDS.
- PROCEDURES HAVE NO PENALTIES OR REWARDS.
In your discipline plan, consider all the different places in the school where you need to control students’ behavior. Consider classroom norms, playground norms, hallway norms, and cafeteria norms. Explore other places and norms as you think about your school and the expectations you have for your students.
Dear Coolidge
Staff,
It’s that time of year - Back To
School! Last year brought many
thought-provoking changes and learning challenges – adding instructional
coaches to our staff as well as a new literacy program. Please allow me to thank each of you for such
an incredible year as I look forward to an even better one! I hope this letter
finds you well-rested and prepared to begin the 2017-2018 school year! There is
a lot to be excited about in this new school year, including new staff, new
curriculum, and new students. I look
forward to you sharing in these exciting times.
Our focus remains on increasing student
achievement every day by providing a challenging, supportive and creative
environment in which to develop lifelong learning and proper social
skills. Your administrative team and I
look forward to partnering with you this year in this ever-important
endeavor. For the 2017-2018 school year
we welcome Ms. Jana Huggins as our new assistant principal. Returning to the Coolidge team is Ms. Helmick
as our instructional coach and Mr. Dye has moved to a new position as remedial
specialist. We are lucky to have Ms.
Ross on staff 5 days a week this year. Additionally,
Coolidge has teamed with the Oklahoma Health Department to bring additional
services to our students and families at Coolidge Elementary School.
Starting a new year gives us the
opportunity to make new plans, design new strategies, and implement new
ideas. There is a special kind of joy
and satisfaction in planning lessons and activities for a new class; although
the subject might be the same, the students are new, and they appreciate the
planning that is done for them. Here are
a few important dates for your calendar:
·
July 17 – 21

·
July 20 -21

·
July 25 – Balanced Literacy

Together we’ll make our upcoming year an extremely rewarding and
memorable experience.
