Informal Observations - the window has opened. Just an FYI I will be evaluating Standards Based Planning, Identifying Critical Content from the Standards (required evidence in every lesson), and Professional Responsibilities (including lesson plans posted, ABL lab usage (data taken from spreadsheet of sign in sheets on the computer), PLC/Faculty meeting attendance, Safe School completions, etc).
Remember - you can ASSIGN MyOn books for your students to read as part of their Daily 5 Literacy Block. With MyOn these assigned books can be on their level while still focusing on the literacy skill you are covering. Also, MyOn has many books that are non-fiction in Social Studies and Science. Please utilize this valuable resource.
5th grade had spent the most time reading on Myon with 335 hours and 56 minutes. The most popular book in October was Bone-Chilling Ghost Storeies. It was read 26 times for 228 minutes.
What was the most popular book on MyOn the month of October for Coolidge students? Please respond in the comments section. Don't forget to include your name. Drawing will be held Tuesday during Rise N Shine for all correct responses.
Benchmark Literacy - you should be finishing up Unit 3 test. Unit 4 is the last of November, first of December and we start Unit 5 when we return from Winter Break.
Relevance of School
Student-Facing Definition

Building Blocks Definition

I believe that school is valuable and the things I learn are interesting.

Overview
| ||||
When you feel that school is relevant, you believe that the things that you are learning are important and worth knowing. If you feel that what you are learning is worth knowing, then you are more likely to be motivated and engaged, even if the content of what you’re learning is rather boring. There are two basic ways that learning can be relevant:

Plan a Field Trip
|
Plan a field trip and make explicit connections between the students field trip experiences and what they are learning in class. The trip doesn’t have to be over-the-top! For example, if you’re learning about nutrition plan a trip to the local grocery store and have students explore questions related to shopping for a balanced diet. If you’re learning about percentages, plan a trip to the mall and assign students a project related to shopping for the best sales discounts.

Managing and Embracing Change
Gail Boushey
Issue #538
Whether it was a new school, team, grade level, curriculum, or, of course, a group of students, we all experienced some type of change this year. If the change required us to adopt new patterns of behavior, we can find comfort in knowing that new behaviors don’t happen overnight, but when we make micro-shifts each day, the tiny increments of change day in and day out will have a cumulative effect.
A second-grade teacher recently told me she was having a difficult time meeting with individual students. She was used to staying in place and having groups come to her, so standing up and moving to confer with individuals didn’t feel natural or comfortable yet. Her honesty and her ability to articulate the heart of the change enabled us to determine what steps she could take.
We came up with small shifts in behavior that would lead to her desired goal. Her first step was to stand up and just walk around after she finished meeting with a small group. She did this once, and then a second time, and on the third time she sat down next to a student and conferred.
Micro-shifts in behavior are small and doable. When we start this way, we experience success and are likely to continue. For example, if we want to confer with students each day, we’ll work with one student today. If we want to teach brain-compatible focus lessons, we’ll teach one lesson today that focuses on just a single teaching point. If we want our students to be independent, we’ll teach them how to build stamina with Read to Self. If we want assessments to inform instruction, we will assess one student today.
Then, we keep doing those things, every single day. We’ll get used to conferring with a student and want to confer with more. We’ll see the follow-through with the brief focus lessons and want to teach more brain-compatible lessons. We’ll see that our students have more reading stamina and don’t want to stop reading, so we will extend their time. We’ll experience the deep understanding we get of a student from assessing them and will want to find out more about the other students too.
We may not think what we did this morning by meeting with one student was important, but it was, or that teaching students to read independently for three minutes made a difference, but it did. The more I work with teachers and students and learn to embrace change myself, the more convinced I am that the road to success is paved with cobblestones just like these.
A Day at the Pumpkin Farm
Perry and Paula are visiting the pumpkin farm. Mom drives as Dad sings with them in the car. Finally, they see Farmer Jack’s Pumpkin Patch.
It is a huge field of pumpkins. The pumpkins grow on vines. Farmer Jack shows them a perfect pumpkin.
“This is the stem,” he says. “It is attached to the vine.”
He says the outside of the pumpkin is the rind and the lines are called ribs. He cuts the pumpkin in half. Perry and Paula touch the seeds and pulp inside. It is sticky and gooey! Farmer Jack gives them roasted pumpkin seeds. They are crunchy!
