Building Problem of Practice: Helping Students Practice Skills, Strategies, and Processes

Focus Statement: When the content involves a skill, strategy, or process, the teacher engages students in practice activities that help them develop fluency and alternative ways of executing procedures.

Desired Effect: Evidence (formative data) demonstrates students develop automaticity with skills, strategies, or processes.

Monday:  18th  Regular School Day.  DISTRICT COMMON ASSESSMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED THIS WEEK>
Tuesday:  19th  Instructional Rounds during PLC.  Check schedule to see if you are being observed.  Be sure you have a Problem of Practice you would like observers to look for.  Potluck luncheon.  Faculty Meeting - Infinite Campus Referral Review with Brian Irvine,
Wednesday:  20th  Leadership Meeting - Safe Schools Meeting.
Thursday:  21st  Brett out all day - Principal Meeting.  Report Card Posting Cycle Opens (due next Wed at 8:00 a.m.)
Friday: 22nd   End of 1st Quarter.  DISTRICT COMMON ASSESSMENTS MUST BE COMPLETE AND IN MASTERY CONNECT.

Don't forget - if you are going to be out you need to A.  Notify Mrs. Brett and/or Mrs. Huggins AND place the absence in ASEOP.

Practice math facts with play-doh, scissors, and a deck of cards. Students can write the math fact on a dry erase board.  If you need a deck of cards there are plenty in the office.  See Ms. Ozoya.

Potential Problem:  Struggling with students getting work completed?  They may need a modification of chunking the assignment.

Cut a file folder into strips.  The shorter the attention span, the smaller you will cut the strips.  I cut this one into 3 parts.  Students open 1 flap at a time and always begin at the top and work their way down.  Students complete the work that they can see when a flap is open.  Close the flap and then open the next flap until they finish the assignment.  This makes the assignment in "bite size pieces".  Use this strategy with students who have trouble getting started on an assignment.  With those students they are overwhelmed with all of the words and graphics on the page.  They don't feel like they will ever finish the assignment so why even begin.  If they need extra motivation and a chance to move, you can set up a stamp station near your desk.  Each time they complete the work in a flap area, they show you the work, and then go to the stamp station to get a stamp.

Message from the Superintendent:

Team OKCPS,

The OKCPS Leadership Team has been closely monitoring our enrollment numbers to prepare for the annual rebalancing process. Staff rebalancing is a normal yearly operational process in which we apply our existing staffing formula to actual enrollment numbers for 2017-18 versus the projected enrollment we used to prepare for the school year. This process is a way for OKCPS to ensure we are using our resources wisely and that no classroom is significantly above or below our planned student/teacher ratios.

The staffing formula process begins with the development of enrollment projections by our Planning, Research, and Evaluation team based upon historical enrollment trends approximately six months prior to the start of the school year. Staffing formulas (for example, 1st grade classrooms are staffed with 1 teacher per 28 students) are applied to the projected enrollment numbers, and then schools make staffing shifts (adds, changes or deletions) to be ready for the projected enrollment for the upcoming school year.

Adhering to the staffing formula is a critical component to ensure the district remains compliant for the annual Title I Comparability Report and, more importantly, so we can make sure our staff are allocated where they are needed to serve the students attending our schools.

Based on our staffing formula and current enrollment data, district leaders have identified that a number of schools have positions that are in excess of their staffing formula by grade level.

It is important to note that no employee will lose their job as a result of this rebalancing process. We will simply redistribute staff to schools with vacant positions. As always, OKCPS will follow our CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) guidance for the administrative transfer of any teachers who may be affected by the transfer of their position.

I want you to know that district leaders are committed to working closely with school principals over the next week to determine how best to accommodate any needed changes and to minimize the impact felt by our students.

Sincerely,
OKCPS Superintendent

When I have more information about potential staffing changes at Coolidge I will let you know.  I appreciate your working together to support each other during this difficult time.  If you have questions/concerns please come see me.
