  • Monday:  Welcome back from Fall Break.

Teacher Attendance:

Teachers who miss 11 days of school a year are considered “frequently absent” (as defined by the National Council on Quality Teaching).  These absences include personal days/sick days/professional development.  Studies from the National Bureau of Academic Research show that classes where the teacher is frequently absent have a significant decrease in student outcomes.  If we want to help our children be their most successful, we have to BE HERE.  The research is definitive- your attendance makes a difference for your students.
Student achievement is directly tied to attendance - theirs and ours.


Coolidge Teachers missed 72 days (sick leave, professional leave, and personal leave) in the first 9 weeks of school (96%)  Teacher attendance was 97% without professional leave.  Our goal is 98% - we almost made it.  Lets try for that 98% for 2nd nine weeks.

Thanksgiving Break is November 23 - 25th.  Please remember by contract you cannot take personal days prior to a break.  If you take sick leave I will need a doctors note.

Safe School's Training:
Safe School Training is DUE to be 100% complete by November 1st.  There are teachers and or staff members that have have not completed their training. Please be sure you are not on this list.

I-Observation:  Formal observations are upon us.  These are scheduled observations with a pre and post conference.  Please be sure you have completed the Pre and Post conference forms prior to your scheduled meeting with your evaluating administrator.

  1. Speaking to students and calling them by name sets the tone for the entire day, week, month, year. Is your classroom a place where you would want your child or grandchild to be?

  2. It takes just a few moments to make an extra effort to make each person you come in contact with feel special. This is something I will work towards. It is easy to get in the groove of the day and forget how special you can make people feel with just a few moments of your time and attention.

  3. Addressing children by name makes them feel self worth and worthy of your attention, it makes them know that you care. Before you address a child, think about if that is how you would want to be addressed

  4. What we view as "keeping things moving" or "timely", etc., can seem impersonal and even hurtful to our students, parents and community. Core subjects aren't the only thing they are learning from us - we are their model for grace, acceptance, forgiveness, respect, fairness AND bullying, rudeness, judgement and refusal of acceptance.

  5. I know as I watched the video, it was convicting. I think as teachers we get so focused on getting things done, we shut down anything that might interfere with that. But in doing so, we miss out on opportunities to build rapport and extend learning with our students. It is important to sometimes take a step back and think about how was that perceived? Not how did I mean it but how was it received because sometimes those are different things.

  6. I first saw this video on one of my social media accounts. Many people were agreeing with the video in the comments or saying that they had "mean" teachers like that in school. As I watched this video, it made me realize that I have a huge impact on the day of the student. For example, if I scream at a student as soon as we get to school, they will probably be upset the remainder of the day. I also have to take into consideration that many of my students have working parents and spend most of their days with baby sitters. As an effect, I have to be the loving/caring person in their lives that is always there for them.

  7. Being positive goes a long, long way. We never know what a child has experienced that morning, evening or afternoon. As educators, we have to leave our problems at the door and focus on our students, to some, we're all they have. A smile, high five, pat on the back, taking an extra minute to listen, goes a long way.

  8. I usually only see children for a short amount of time-- and I know that one 5minute interaction can make or even break someone's day.
    Day to day frustrations can spill over into our relationships with the students-- and they will internalize every action. It is important to show them they are important.

  9. I think that especially with our students, it is important that we try our best to show each one of them they are special and cared for. Sometimes we get busy and blow off their little conversations they try to have with us, but I think it is important to make an effort to build a relationship with every one of them because just the little interactions during the day can determine what kind of day they are going to have.

  10. It upset me to see the teachers/staff disregard the student when he was trying to be friendly. If a student goes out of their way to say hi to us, we need to go out of our way to say hi back.

  12. Building relationships with students and being able to call them by name is a very important part of our school. Knowing who are related and what the students are into can make a big difference in that students day. I feel that I am in a special position that I see all of the student 2 or 3 times a week and I feel that I have a better relationship with most of our students and can talk them down or out of behaviors more than other teachers. Relationships are so important for our students and making those connections.

  13. I try my best to get to know the students names in our building, a coach from another building made the comment to me yesterday, "I miss not knowing everyone's names...." That stayed with me all day, it is a small thing that lets kiddos know they can trust me and that I care. I hope that she left encouraged to do the same in her own building!
