Benchmark Literacy - Text Important, Sequence of Events

About the Strategy

• The order in which events happen is called a sequence of events.

I Station Reading:

I was happy to share my red cape today with several students for going up levels.  I am going to look for a different report that will show growth - by points not so much levels for our math report and awards next week.  I didn't get a pic of all the students who went up just one level.  These friends went up 2 levels. 

 

What do you notice about the growth of the Lexile measure?  Thinking of your specific classroom, what strategies do you think you could employ to help students increase their Lexile level?  What support do you need to help make this happen? 

Personal Learning Focus Please be sure you have submitted your Personal Growth Plan for Approval to Ms. Brett and Ms. Lundy.   Report Cards: The first-quarter report cards cycle opens on Thursday, October 10th.  You have 2 days after the end of the quarter, so grades and all attendance should be posted by the end of the business day on the 23rd. How are you using your testing data? A child takes an assessment - what are you doing with that information from the assessment?  Do you have a clear learning target so the child knows what they need to do to show mastery?  Success Criteria defines what the student must be able to do to be successful on that standard - it is NOT task specific but it does improve the quality of work produced by the student. Your leadership team met on 9.30.2019 and reviewed these Oklahoma Essential Element 2:  Academic Performance - Classroom Evaluation/Assessment.  The school faculty uses multiple evaluation and assessment strategies to continuously monitor and modify instruction to meet student needs and support proficient student work. Performance Expectations:  The school leader communicates both a focused mission to improve student achievement and a vision of the critical elements of curriculum and instructional practices that makes high achievement possible. The Leadership Team selected 2.2 as the building focus for this element.  Teachers collaborate in the design of assessment.  Teachers collaborate in the design of authentic assessment tasks aligned with Oklahoma Academic Standards and work to develop common formative assessments.  During our Professional Development on October 21st, we will cover Mastery Connect assessments and building common assessments as a team. CAFE Menu–Keep 4 Things in Mind

Here are 4 important things to remember when designing your CAFE Menu. You may want to pass them on to a friend or colleague who is new to the CAFE System

1. Keep it simple! Resist the urge to make it cutesy. Think of your menu board simply as a place to put important information. You want the goals and strategies to be the stars of your menu, not the purple, polka-dotted, zebra-striped borders and headers with stick-figure children peeking over the top. You can make it look colorful, clean and neat using construction paper and a pleasant font. It's really all you need.

2. Keep it close! From your teaching chair, you should be able to touch the menu columns with your hand or a pointer. The menu won't be an effective tool if the children have to turn their bodies to see it across the room. If necessary, place your CAFE board on a display board so it can be set right beside your chair.

3. Children own it! Let them help you create the board. Students can do the writing (be sure the words are spelled correctly), illustrate the strategies, and declare their goals. This is important! Don't take shortcuts and have all the I-charts and strategies laminated before the children even arrive. Think about it this way, would you rather teach in a classroom that you designed or one prepared by someone else?

4. Use it! Every day we read books to the children; every day we can make a reference to the CAFE board. As you build your menu, strategy by strategy, it will represent countless hours of sharing and learning. It shouldn't become just a big poster hanging on the wall. What you and your students get out of it will be directly proportional to the amount of time and effort you put into it. 

I think you will find that the moments spent teaching from the CAFE menu will be the best of the day. Stay passionate, positive and persistent!

It is easy to be hard on others, treat people harshly and push people away.  Anyone can do that, but it takes a brave soul to take the time to be gentle and understanding of others.
Be strong enough to be gentle.

Shout out to Ms. Harris' kindergarten class and the STEAM room.  They were busy working when downtown came to view our room.  As I expected, he had wonderful things to say about our students and teachers.  He took a picture of the schedule and plans to bring others to see the fantastic work that is going on at Coolidge.  

Field trips are part of the educational experience, provided that the field trip is for educational means.  The district has new procedures in place for the 2019-2020 school year.  If you plan on having your grade level go on a field trip please take note:
Field Trips must meet an educational standard and be approved by the building principal. If the field trip is over 25 miles it must also be approved by Dr. Morris.
A bus must be reserved 2 months in advance.  There will only be 20 busses per day available so don't wait till the last minute.  Permission slips and forms are located in the Google Classroom.

Please be aware that your students might be late coming to class if they are in the library with their grownup.
Please be sure you make all visitors feel welcome to Coolidge.

IStation Testing:  The window for IStation testing closes this week.  You should have all your students tested PRIOR to our Parent Teacher Conferences that are Thursday and Friday.  You will need this data to complete your APP forms.  It is the expectation that EVERY child will have an APP regardless of their IStation score.  Every child and parent should be kept informed of their child's academic progress.

The Coolidge Data wall has been started in the IC Coaches room tracking Reading and Math data from IStation.  PreK will be traing ELQA data on their board.  I ran out of energy and magnets but it should be finished next week (the magnets arrive Monday).  If a student name is verticle it means they have NOT finished testing.  It is the expectation that you will correct that when you come to your PLC meeting on Tuesday.  Each month at the beginning of the month when students log into IStation they will take an assessment. During PLC meetings we will be tracking and moving the magnets looking towards student growth.  Each teacher has a different colored magnet.

 As you can see from the 4th-grade data we have a lot of work to do this year to move our students forward.

Benchmark Literacy - Unit 1 Week 2.  It is the expectation that everyone is teaching Benchmark Literacy with fidelity.  When I come into your classrooms I should be seeing students working together reading, reading to self, working on word work, working on IStation and/or Myon, and working in small teacher-led intervention stations.

Unannounced Formal Observations will begin Monday morning.  Remember you have 5 days to collaborate and then the observation will be finalized.  These observations do count in your final evaluation.
